A Weekend in Pismo Beach with Kids

Need to getaway? Check out beautiful Pismo Beach located on California’s Central Coast. With abundant beaches and hiking options plus easy access to wine tasting, agri-tourism and other family activities, there is something for everyone.

Day 1:

Getting to Pismo Beach by car is relatively easy as it is located right alongside Highway 101. From the San Francisco Bay Area, expect a 3-4 hour drive depending on where you are coming from.

For anyone flying in, the closest airport would be San Luis Obispo Regional Airport serviced by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines and United Airlines. If you are driving and need a break before you get to Pismo Beach, try Firestone Walker Taproom Restaurant in Paso Robles or Wild Fields Brewhouse in Atascadero. The latter has food, drinks and a huge game area perfect for families.

Upon arrival in Pismo Beach, check into your accommodation and get to the beach. The Pismo Beach Pier is a great place to explore with lots of dining and recreation options.

Need a play to stay? Check out The Cliffs Hotel & Spa for an oceanfront option.

Day 2:

Start your day off with some coffee and a breakfast burrito at The Steaming Bean in Shell Beach. Once you’re fueled up, take advantage of the variety of activities that San Luis Obispo County has to offer. Some suggestions:

  • Visit Avila Valley Barn to meet some farm animal friends and take part in seasonal activities like u-pick harvests and tractor rides. Save room for lunch and pie from this spot!
  • Grab a picnic lunch and bring the kids & your pup to Kelsey See Canyon Winery.
  • Visit the Pismo Beach Pier and check out the swings on the sand.
  • Head south to Oceano where you can find the sand dunes.
  • Take a hike in Montaña de Oro State Park – Spooner Cove is a great choice for tidepooling.
  • See Monarch Butterflies at the Monarch Butterfly Grove (late October-February)
  • Explore nearby Avila Beach, home to the Central Coast Aquarium
  • Take a dip in the mineral springs (ages 5 & up) at Sycamore Mineral Springs Resort.
  • Explore the many beaches or take a swim in your hotel’s pool.

Day 3:

Before heading out, enjoy a stroll on the beach and take in the laid-back vibe of this region. If you’re heading north, consider stopping in downtown San Luis Obispo and grab coffee from Scout Coffee or a freshly made smoothie from Seed.

What to pack:

  • Casual clothing but do bring layers for chillier days (in the summer months)
  • Tennis shoes and sandals should be sufficient; water shoes are great if you plan on tidepooling.
  • Beach canopy, chairs and sand toys.
  • Sun protection: hats, sunglasses, sunscreen.
