Tips for Visiting Crater of Diamonds State Park

Did you know there is a place in the United States where you can dig for diamonds and keep what you find? Yes, you read that correctly! At Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park, visitors can explore 37 acres of fields for diamonds, gemstones and minerals. Here’s what you need to know:

Where:

It is located in Murfreesboro, Arkansas which is about a 2 hour drive from Little Rock.

When to go:

The park is open year-round, however, spring and fall are the most optimal times to go weather-wise. In the summer months, it can be very hot and the fields are full sun. In the winter months, expect cooler temperatures and rain.

The rain can, however, work to your advantage as it can bring new discoveries to the surface!

Tickets/Cost:

Tickets for Crater of Diamonds State Park are available 30 days out or can be purchased on-site. Your admission covers entrance to the park only. If you need tools, you can also rent them. We got the basic kit which has a bucket, shovel and two sieves.

What to Bring:

  • Canopy or umbrella as the fields are direct sun (if you’re driving and have room in your car). For anyone flying, this will likely not be possible.
  • Lots of water
  • Snacks/Lunch
  • Sunscreen
  • Towel (for after you rinse off)
  • Change of clothes and shoes (flip flops were nice to put on after)
  • Bag for dirty clothes/shoes

What to Wear:

While many people are wearing shorts and tank tops, we opted for long pants to give our legs some protection. We were very happy with this decision. We also opted for rain boots so we could easily walk in the little creeks that go across the property. Most people were in old tennis shoes or sandals. A hat and sunglasses is highly recommended.

Will I find a diamond? Is it hard to find diamonds?

Yes, it definitely doesn’t happen everyday! Some people opt to look for them on the surface while others will dig more. Be sure to do some research in advance so you understand each technique.

What else can I do in the area?

  • The city of Hot Springs, also home to Hot Springs National Park, is about an hour away and provides a great spot to relax and stay the night either before or after your mining adventure.
  • There are several crystal mines in the area if you want to get the full mining experience on your trip. Check out Wegner Crystal Mines and Ron Coleman Mining.
  • Little Rock has a tons of museums and a beautiful riverfront area that are also worth exploring.
